West Point Grey was discovered by Spanish explorers in 1791. In 1865, the first logging camp was founded, and a few years later, a whaling station was set up. But significant settlement did not occur until the late 1890’s, with the establishment of the English Bay Canning Factory at the north foot of Balaclava. The cannery’s success, though, was its own downfall, and it was closed in 1905 as its buildings and odour began to encroach on settlers’ homes.
In 1908, the Municipality of West Point Grey was established and the newly elected Council moved quickly to improve access and services to the area. In the first year of incorporation, water service reached the area, construction began on the scenic Northwest Marine Drive, and the Jericho Golf & Country Club opened. By 1909, a one-room schoolhouse had to be built for the area’s 24 children. It still exists, although now dwarfed by the much larger Queen Mary School.
West 10th Avenue is the commercial centre of this beautiful neighbourhood. Yet even now, with over 130 shops and services to choose from, it maintains a small town feel. You’ll find several well-established, long time businesses. You will also discover some new shops and services, eager to be a part of the community.
